Will you tell a story from Nepal? — Anonymous

I have been letting this sit for awhile now. I have been trying to find the right story to tell, and I am still not sure if I found the right one. Before I left, someone in our group who had also gone last year said, “you go for the animals, but you come back for the people”. And now that I have had the amazing opportunity to experience this remarkable culture, what she said is dead on.

I fell in love with the people there. They were so sincere and everything about them was amazing. They just had this radiance that brought so much light to the world, and I wish we had more people like that here. We are so cold here, and there, even though they don’t have much, they value everything they have.

The story that stands out to me the most about the people is one evening when we were walking through one of the villages we were in. There were these 3 children that were playing together and were so cute, so we took their picture. One of the people in our group showed them the picture, and the kids were just mesmerized. They had never seen a camera before, or let alone a mirror so they never knew what they looked like. But they were able to tell because of being able to identify who they were standing next to. They thought it was so cool and so funny, and seeing their reaction and hearing their laughter just put so many things into perspective.

Every time I look through my pictures and I come across, theirs, I can’t help but smile and replay their laughter in my head. It was a magical experience that I will keep with me for a long time.

A herd of elephants say goodbye to Lola the dead elephant calf at Hellabrunn Zooin Munich, Germany. A baby elephant who tragically died at a German zoo was brought back to her herd so they could say goodbye. Lola, a three month old elephant, died on 21 January during a CT scan ahead of an operation to fix a serious heart defect. Lola’s body was brought back to the herd so that her mother, Panang (22), could say farewell. Afterwards the herd gently nuzzled the lifeless body with their trunks and took their leave of her.
